Hals Exhibition: opulence! Joviality! Quirkiness! Wholesomeness! I don’t remember the last time I enjoyed an exhibition so very much. Van Gogh’s “Nothing, nothing, nothing but portraits” that are as precious as Dante is speaking for itself, of course. It’s also pleasing to know that the way the exhibition was installed pissed off the art busy body of The Guardian, Jonathan Jones:
Right from the start, something is off. In the first room, an unknown man and woman hang side by side. He’s holding a skull and looks grave. She’s inscrutable. Encountering these people I felt nothing, and it only got worse. I found myself walking back and forth increasingly adrift and unhappy, past one technically brilliant painting of a flushed face after another. ©
—Aw snap!
...It means that the curators nailed their job perfectly.
