And, of course, I couldn’t miss visiting one of my most beloved Lovecraftian locations in Providence, along with the Athenaeum and Hay Library—“Lovecraft Arts & Sciences,” a lovely bookshop on 65 Weybosset St, which is situated in the old arcade opposite the Superman building (another architectural Art Deco gem of the city).
The atmosphere of the shop has remained the same, spooky and marvellous, and all the true connoisseurs of Weird would always find something special for themselves. This time the place was packed with people (seemingly those of us attending NecronomiCon), and that also was exciting.
The Lovecraft Arts & Sciences Council collection never disappoints: there were lots of vintage editions of pre-Weird/Gothic fiction, some reasonable amount of sci fi, and, of course, numbers of books in academic Lovecraftiana—as, for example, the full “Annotated Lovecraft” by Leslie S. Klinger with whom we co-hosted our panel “Women in Weird”: it’s a great edition, and I managed to fetch one volume at NecronomiCon-2019. Sadly, buying the rest at once isn’t very practical in my case, because my suitcase is already full. Alas! Most likely, I’ll order them online afterwards.
I spotted a few new works by the renowned Providence sculptor, Gage Prentiss (more netsuke), and they look wonderful as always.
If you’re going to visit Providence in the foreseeable future,
please, don’t overlook this place and say warm “hello” to the lovely owners from me.
