This is the most staggering, insulting, self-serving, self-righteous, ignorant, obnoxious and idiotic review I’ve read recently: suddenly any of Peter Bradshaw’s articles don’t look that trite in comparison.
These days Bergman’s reputation is in eclipse [nope, it hasn’t decreased in recent decades; in fact, quite the opposite happened—E.T.]. The European arthouse has withered and much of Bergman’s oeuvre is frankly unwatchable — all those symbols, neuroses and orgies on the beach — while the “great man” theory of art history has been taken out at the knees. ©
