Hallowe’en: “The Best Horror Movies for Halloween—Without the Gore” (by Richard Brody)

Full disclaimer: while speaking about abstruse critics, I don’t want to bash them all immediately. Many of them are self-ironic enough for not taking their exercises in purple prose way too seriously. Yet.
Oddly enough (not), Brody is that type of annoying highbrow author who dares to make a full blown generalisation for the sake of a catchy headline. Perhaps it is not that surprising given that he’s the long-standing contributor for the New Yorker that is famous for their ornate columns, but with his experience and knowledge he should have known better, I guess.
Halloween is my least favorite viewing season because genre is a curse and horror films carry an extra curse—the curse of gore. ©
—oh stop it. The best horror masterpieces (if we are not talking about slashers: they are in their own category) are not supposed to be full of gore.
His list isn’t bad, though.
