Strictly speaking, the Apple Day celebrations got us a bit confused, as I was absolutely certain that everything might happen yesterday (and since Saturday’s weather was dreadful, with lots of showers throughout the day, we were happy that the festivities had been postponed for a bit: a wise move from the Botanical Garden).
Today was a lovely day, warm enough for lengthy outdoor activities, with radiant sunny intermissions, so we arrived to the Garden earlier than usual, i.e. right after noon.
Boy, was it busy: it never ceases to amaze me how many people the little lawn in front of the greenhouses can hold at once. The entire space was packed with food trucks and tents, and mostly people either enjoyed themselves or queued (or tried hard to combine both). The street food was at best mediocre (the usual thing) except freshly brewed coffees and cakes: those were lovely (carrot cake, I see ya!).
As the main event was centred around the apple identification & advice thingy, we didn’t have the tiniest desire to join the masses: after all, if you are visiting the Apple Fair, your main assumption is that the aforementioned apples might be decent, right? So, we took our risks and bought two packs of different sorts, Red Devil—you simply cannot spot the name and not buy it!—and Laxton’s Superb (those originated from Bedford, the land of The Panacea Society, and had been cultivated since 1897). And, of course, it turns out that they are lovely, juicy and refreshing.
Apple Day-2024, looking forward to meeting you again.
