Recently I’ve been seeing an enormous number of ads* with the double eyelid tapes (i.e. invisible single-side stickers) for hooded eyes elsewhere. Of course, it’s not a new thing at all yet suddenly it’s been advertised (quite aggressively, I might add) as a “solid non-surgical solution for droopy skin around your maturing eyes.” As much as I am all for an unquestionably great “you do you” approach concerning your skincare and other life choices, my own opinion (not an unsolicited advice yet again) is simple: please, don’t do it.
Firstly, it can be quite harmful for your eyelids due to constant pressure on them (do not recommend to those of us who have a tendency to get the elevated intraocular pressure, i.e. pretty much all my myopic peers with different stages of cataract). The fragment from a peer-reviewed article** on the subject in a medical journal states that
“Four-week period of double eyelid tape wear had a significant effect on ocular surface health, namely, an increase in conjunctival staining, corneal staining, corneal abrasion, and meibomian gland dysfunction grading, with a significant reduction in tear break-up time and intraocular pressure” etc.
Secondly, who once and for all decided that hooded eyes, mature and not, looked ugly? Ava Gardner, Simone Signoret and Romy Schneider (also my late Mum) are only a few examples of how stunning hooded eyes could look, not to mention the vast majority of beauties of Asian heritage.
So, we are good I guess: thanks but no thanks.
