As many of my friends probably know, I’ve been following Nazanin’s case from the very beginning—partly, I’m afraid, because of my own egoistic worries as of being a dual citizen, but mostly because of a complete nightmare of her case, which hasn’t ended since.
The fact that, most likely, she’ll be detained again quite soon (she’s currently under home arrest and lost her appeal to clear her name from being labelled as an anti-Iranian “propagandist”) is chilling: given that she’s already spent five years in prison, the Iranian authorities wouldn’t hesitate to incarcerate her again.
Everyone who has at least two working brain cells, knows that she’s been held all this time as a hostage due to Britain’s refusal to pay the debt of many millions to Iran: both governments are keeping up their appearances, pretending that it’s not the case, which makes everything even more reprehensible.
My utter respect is going to her family, her husband Richard and her daughter Gabriella, who are doing everything they can, and even more, to help her. The first hunger strike started by Richard two years ago made possible to return Gabriella home (she was with her Mum, when Nazanin was detained at the Teheran airport, and lived with Nazanin’s parents), and now he’s doing it again.
Johnson’s government cannot turn a blind eye to this situation anymore, and neither can they continue this political disaster at Nazanin’s and Richard’s expense. Liz Truss as new Foreign Secretary must resolve this mess ASAP.
And I repeat again and again: Nazanin should be free and reunited with her family in the UK.
