7th Anniversary of British Citizenship (En)

On this day 7 years ago, in a sunny room at Shire Hall (which is no more on Castle Hill, as they moved their County Council headquarters to Alconbury Weald) I sung “God, save the Queen” and got my certificate of British Citizenship (I obtained my passport a few days later via the post): my husband was sitting in the front raw with Prof. Simon Franklin, his colleague and our dear mutual friend from Clare College.
After the ceremony we had tea and biscuits, served a bit awkwardly (as there were many of us), but it was nice. These two feelings—warmth and awkwardness—would define my connections with this country perfectly.
Love you dearly, my precious Stepmotherland. And thank you for accepting me.
