Лотарингские tutti quanti: P. 3 (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy)

Museum tutti quanti: P. 1
Since the weather has been dismal almost all day (it’s rained cats and dogs) and wandering the streets, albeit Art Nouveau, became a dud even with an umbrella and a cagoule, we decided to go to the local Museum of Fine Arts (we visited it last time, but all I remembered were de La Tour’s works), and here are some bits and pieces from this trip.
Their Renaissance collection is pretty solid (better than Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam), comprising both Italian and Northern Renaissance artworks, and the real gems of this part were Mello da Gubbio, Perugino, and Lucas from Leiden.

My morning source of fascination (and subsequent inspiration) is the names of Penhaligon’s perfumes—The Tragedy of Lord George! The World According to Arthur! Endymion! The Omniscient Mr Thompson! The Inimitable Mr Penhaligon! The Coveted Duchess Rose! Artemisia! CONSTANTINOPLE! BABYLON!
…True songs of mystery and imagination.

One of my most beloved golden hoops that I inherited from Mum with a few other heirlooms broke this morning: the inner clasp has disappeared, which means that they are irreparable. It left me inconsolable: I know for a fact that Mum adored them, and my earliest memories about her are her face, her favourite perfume (Vivre by Molyneux) and her hoops.
Of course, I will treasure them and preserve them in one of the trinket boxes, but the idea that I couldn’t wear them anymore makes me sad. Was I rough when I put them on in a hurry? I don’t know, maybe, and this inconsistent feeling of regret and shame about my awkwardness makes the feeling of loss even sharper. Stupid moment of a clunky move.
***
After one of Mum’s golden hoops broke, I decided to visit the jewellers that had repaired a few of my trinkets before, and so I did. They took the damaged earring and promised to restore it: what a relief!—and in addition, two golden chains with missing clasps, also inherited from my parents. One needed advanced restoration, and the other one just a mild tweak.

Cuba Libre”:

Boy oh boy, the return journey was long!.. Three consecutive trains—TGV from Nancy to Paris, Eurostar from Gare du Nord to St Pancras and, finally, Thameslink to Cambridge, too much hassle with customs here and there, unpacking the luggage and finally—finally—we can sit without moving and crack sour jokes on the election updates.
Oh, and this little one came with us as a reminder of a splendid, wondrous and whimsical Nancy:
