Nothings and triviality

Was awakened in the morning by a text from my GP surgery; they asked me awkwardly if I was comfortable to disclose my ethnicity: we are updating our records, they explained.
No shit, Sherlock, although your categories don’t seem to be broad enough for folks like me, as I am, according to the only suitable offer for myself, the “white other.”
***
Світає, край неба палає;
Тихесенько вітер віє;
Степи, лани мріють;
Верби зеленіють;
Сади рясні похилились;

On March 8 I remember with the deepest gratitude the NecronomiCon Providence panel “The Weird has always been female: the Women’s Canon in Weird Fiction,” where my amazing fellow ladies in Gothic/ horror studies participated: that was one of the best and brightest events out there.
My dear female colleagues in academic Lovecraftiana and Weird/horror/gothic studies, may your endeavours and achievements always be recognised and accepted: you thoroughly deserve it. Happy International Women’s Day!

Nothings and triviality

Another troubled yet fascinating female writer

An extraordinary writer, a troublemaker, a tragic storyteller: a shame she was almost forgotten. But there is always hope in “almost,” because her short stories, her own variations of Weird fiction, have recirculated.
Brennan died in 1993 in New York. In the last years of her life she occupied a box room beside the woman’s lavatory at The New Yorker offices and was frequently admitted to a series of mental hospitals. She had been married, but only briefly, to the magazine’s managing editor, St Clair McKelway. They split amicably in 1959 when Brennan was 42. She never remarried and she didn’t have children. After divorcing McKelway, Brennan resided in a succession of well-appointed hotels and rented apartments. She also spent long periods in the country. According to editor Gardner Botsford she could “transport her entire household, all her possessions, and her cats – in a taxi”. In one Manhattan apartment she went to the considerable expense of installing parquet flooring, but decamped to the Algonquin Hotel, leaving the flat vacant until the lease ran out.

Murdaugh Murder Trial

UPD. Guilty. He’s been convicted unanimously.
***
I have absolutely no clue why I am so invested in this case: maybe because it looks so alien that it feels like a reasonable distraction from all the ongoing horrors which I don’t want to mention, and also it’s an oddly satisfying way to procrastinate when you need to finish several projects at once.
It’s simultaneously a total train wreck and a fascinating exercise in learning a bit more about the rural American South. By the way, about this whole Low Country (or is it Lowcountry?) thing: can it be regarded as an American version of our Fenland, just much warmer? After all, it’s all swamps and remote tiny islands...
Today’s closing arguments, both from the defence side and the state, were weirdly wonderful: it seems I was in the tiniest minority of people who thought that the defence lawyer did a decent job (although a bit chaotic in terms of consistency)—straight to the point and moderately convincing (if you still have reasonable doubts that this sociopath somehow isn’t guilty), but he was roasted in the comments on the Law & Order chat for being “dull and non-dramatic, unlike the prosecutor”—everything I find absolutely preposterous in the court presentation.

For winter’s rains and ruins are over,
And all the season of snows and sins;
The days dividing lover and lover,
The light that loses, the night that wins;
And time remembered is grief forgotten,
And frosts are slain and flowers begotten,
And in green underwood and cover
Blossom by blossom the spring begins. ©
