So, TL;DR: a real estate developer (and a father of two), Brandon Miller took his own life after several reported botched financial dealings in NYC. His wife, Candice Miller (the lifestyle ‘Mama & Tata’ influencer), who lived in the Hamptons with him, recently deleted all of her social media platforms following the news. Many believe that Candice had no idea about her husband's business dealings despite showing off her lavish lifestyle online. ©
I’ve already seen lots of comments, such as “Champagne lifestyle on a beer budget” (the Millers didn’t live within their means, flaunting non-existent wealth etc.), i.e. a usual exposé of the public’s Schadenfreude, which happens every time someone famous (or rich and famous; or beautiful, rich and famous; or all these things together) spectacularly falls from grace, and I have a big issue with that.
Social media taught us that each and every move we made on the Internet never went unpunished: paradoxically, people pleasers could get as much hate as social pariahs, as the lines between those two categories have become thinner and thinner. Not everyone who shows something “nice” is supposed to show off their “things” (whatever they are), but everyone who shows off something “nice,” can be trashed successfully, and we must remember that.
