Beard’s rant about Oxbridge: a deep dive into moral superiority

“This country has been terribly snobbish about what education is for. I spent my life doing Latin and Greek. Actually, I think there’s huge value in that but I’m not going to sit here and say it’s more important for someone to study Latin and Greek rather than practical engineering.
“Most of British culture is still held back by class and privilege, aspirations which rank these subjects into sort of what clever posh kids do and what other people do.” ©
—It is hard to disagree with what she’s saying: duh, meritocracy is indeed a good thing, and, of course, everyone must have practical solutions to obtain their life goals, but I still can’t stand this woman. And her remark towards “clever posh kids” is nothing but snarky. As I remember she made a fuss when the University closed the University Library due to Tour de France rally that was going through the city in 2014 (I can be wrong about the year, though). True that, of course, academics should have proper access to the library, no doubt about that, but the undertone of her statement was blatantly clear: how dare you meddle with my precious hours, wasting my time, which I dedicated to my research. Well, there are things that can—and should be—compromised, but, apparently, her “holier than thou” attitude prevailed.
